Getting started with the Legal Intelligence Platform: Uploading Documents

Uploading your contracts into the Legal Intelligence Platform (LIP) is the first step towards setting your Legal Intelligence Platform up for success. The moment a document is uploaded, it becomes:

  • Searchable: Find the clause, date, or term you need in seconds
  • Analyzable: Use natural language queries across one or many documents

Supported File Types (and What to Avoid)

The platform currently supports the most common contract file types:

  • PDF (.pdf)
  • Microsoft Word (.docx)
  • Microsoft Word (legacy .doc)

If you have other formats (like .txt, .xls, .msg, or scanned image files), you’ll need to convert them to a supported format before uploading.

How to Upload Your Contracts

Manual Document Upload

The most straightforward way to get your documents into the Legal Intelligence Platform is through manual uploading.

This method is perfect for individual documents or small batches that need immediate analysis.

  1. Navigate to the Legal Library page in LIP
  2. Click the “Upload” button at the top right
  3. This opens your local devices’ files, here you can choose your file or select multiple files (hold Ctrl or Cmd to select more than one)
  4. Assign a Permission Group (e.g., “Fund I”, “M&A Team”, or “My Contracts”)
  5. Click Assign & Upload and you're done
  6. Check on the upload status of your uploaded documents in the Uploading & Processing queue
  7. Any documents with key properties missing will appear on the Missing properties list, for you to go in and manually assign the missing properties.

Upload through API Integration for Seamless Document Flow

For organizations with higher volume needs or those looking to automate their document management process, the Legal Intelligence Platform offers robust API integration capabilities.

This allows your existing document management systems, cloud storage solutions, or other legal tech tools to connect directly with the Legal Intelligence Platform.

Documents can flow automatically between systems based on triggers you define – whether that's when contracts are signed, when they're saved to specific folders, or on a regular schedule.

The API integration eliminates manual handling while maintaining all the security controls and permission structures that protect your sensitive information. Your technical team can implement this using our comprehensive API documentation and developer support resources.

Permission Groups: Keep It Organized, Keep It Secure

Every document in the Legal Intelligence Platform is assigned to a Permission Group, which controls who can see and interact with it.

  • Shared Group: Public folder, accessible by all users with an account.
  • Private Group: Folder created for a subset of documents, with assigned access based on teams, funds, or business units
  • Personal Group: Private to you — perfect for redlines or internal notes (auto-assigned when uploading from Word)

You must select a group during the uploading process.

Duplicate Detection

LIP includes automatic duplicate detection to keep your document library clean.

Check the Uploading & Processing queue to see if you have uploaded a document that already exists:

  • The document will be highlighted red and status will show ‘Already exists’
  • The system won’t create a duplicate

This ensures your repository stays consistent, traceable, and clutter-free.

Instant Searchability: No Tagging Required

Unlike older systems that require manual tagging, LIP automatically processes your uploaded documents to make them searchable by:

  • Content: Every clause, sentence, and footnote
  • Title: Find by filename
  • Status: Executed, Review or Unassigned
  • Permission Group: Keep your search scoped to the right teams
  • Document Properties: Automatically extracted document properties, including: Contract Type, Execution Date, Effective Date, Governing Law, Jurisdiction, Term and Parties

That means you can upload a 60-page commercial contract today — and search for “force majeure covering pandemics” five minutes later.

Troubleshooting

Uploads sometimes fail — usually due to file corruption or unsupported formats. If that happens:

  • You’ll see an error in the upload queue
  • You can view the error message for troubleshooting
  • Failed documents can be deleted and re-uploaded

And if you accidentally try to close your browser mid-upload, the platform will warn you before anything is lost.

A Few Helpful Notes

  • No need to assign a contract type on upload
  • Word Add-In uploads go straight to your Personal Group
  • You can’t delete successfully uploaded documents from the queue
  • You can delete failed uploads and try again
